"Same Love"

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' Grammy Performance

What happened at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night was simply amazing. If you didn't know, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed their song "Same Love". Queen Latifah began the sequence with a lovely, little introduction. The group performed the number with a unique twist as this was not the first time they have performed this on TV and yet it still had a fresh take to it. The digital backdrop helped transition, transforming from black and white outlines of windows to full color stained glass. Queen Latifah came out again and announced that she would be marrying 33 couples of different races, nationalities, and sexual preferences. The couples seemed to suddenly appear in the middle of the star studded Grammy audience, took their vows, and were pronounced united by the Queen herself. Straight and gay stood next to each other side by side as the song's title claims. Madonna comes out similar garb she wore earlier in the evening but all white. I can kind of forgive her wardrobe choices because she sings "Open Your Heart to Me" to finish it all off as the couples run out. Like a cherry on top, some bride or overjoyed gay man threw her bouquet to Katy Perry on her way out.

The fact that this is happening on national TV is just freaking huge. Let alone at such a massive award show as the Grammys. This has to give hope to people all across the country, some young, alone and feeling isolated. Since the performance, I've read comments on Facebook from conservatives complaining that the Grammys should be about just music. Well, guess what? It was. Music is inevitably about songs and the one particular song featured happened to be about exactly that, equal love. It doesn't mean you have to like because that is one of the wonderful about things about such an award show; it brings together all genres of music, song, and artists together. I've also hear gays complain about a straight man making money off of a song about gays. Why are we complaining about a couple of smart, secure straight guys who are joining the fight by creating a song full of truths, that everyone needs to hear?

Plus Mary Lambert is freaking amazing. I love the hair, the dress, and her voice. I think Adelle could take a cue fashionwise. Mary sings the line in the song "No crying on Sundays...." And it was hard to listen to her Madonna together because she is extremely talented and Madonna is.....well you know. Either way it is a win, win for the awards show because everyone is talking about it.

Fashion at the Grammy Awards

The Grammys are always a little interesting because it is a little more fun and wild than some of the other more serious award shows of the season. Of course anything gets more interesting when you throw rock/pop stars in the mix.

Paris Hilton wore a shimmering white gown with a sleek cutout back by House of Milan. She also has amazing hair and makeup and that’s hot!

Katy Perry wore an unforgettable and appropriate white gown covered in notes by Valentino. With 11 Grammy nominations, she is not only a winner in the fashion world tonight. Her hair is impeccable is an extensive updo and she is showing just the right amount of skin, which is sometimes hard to do considering the Elmo incident on Sesame Street.

Rita Ora looks like a golden goddess in long sleeved, knee length dress by Lanvin with the slightest hint of green. Her manicure is as wild and fun as the massive rings on her fingers.

Pink never looked so good in a two toned red gown by Johan Johansson. She said it made her feel like a princess and she looks like one.

Rihanna looks super fierce in a red gown with sheer chiffon panels by Azzedine Alaia. Absolutely fucking fabulous bitches and her long loose curls are gorge. This is one of my favorites.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis gave new life to men’s fashion in a dark teal tux and an oversized houndstooth print suit. I absolutely love houndstooth and it looks amazeballs in the oversized print with silver instead of white. Plus I think it is amazingly huge that their album won a Grammy without a record label. Same Love is a song truly about equal rights for all and the fact that it is being applauded is even better.

Taylor Swift’s looks completely statuesque in her silver Gucci dress. The gown features full length diamond chainmail that pretty much rocks my face off and looks like it could stop a bullet. Her ponytail is glamorous and she has been bringing it this award season.

Madonna, Madonna, Madonnna looks awkward channeling a little pimp, a little supreme from American Horror Story Coven but not in a good way. Her grill of gold looks a little ridic. It's not awful but it isn't great either. It is cool that she came dressed like her son but I just it is hard to take her seriously.

Paula Patton wears this wacky zebra, lion hybrid of a dress. Just no Paula. You have to be careful with zebra stripes and this just isn't working.

The Series Premiere of Looking

Looking premiered last night on HBO, following Girls and True Detective, this series centers on three gay men in San Francisco. Jonathon Groff, the principal character, is a little disappointing as the mild and meek, eternally single Patrick. Though obviously attractive and intelligent to boot, (he is a videogame designer) Patrick's self esteem is low and he lets himself be dumped on a first date by a dick of an oncology doctor. (The doctor isn't that attractive in looks or personality either.) Agustin (Frankie Alvarez) is the gay in the relationship of the trio. He and his boyfriend agree to move in together though Frank is more confident about it than Agustin. By the end of the pilot , they have a threesome with some random cute guy they meet and doubts slowly grow within their relationship. Dom (Murray Bartlett) is the 40 year old something whore who just hasn't gotten his life together yet. Still waiting tables at this stage in his life isn't what sends Dom over the edge, but when a younger co-worker refuses to sleep with Dom he suddenly begins to question his purpose in life.

I was excited about a new series on HBO that features three gay men as the main characters but frankly these are just shallow stereotypes. Is it funny the guys start the episode by jokingly cruising the park as some sort of experiment? Yes, but most gays today aren't cruising parks for dick because it is 2014 and not 19something. Maybe that goes to show just how different the new generation of gay is but that is where the bubble bursts. The show and its characters have to begin somewhere of course and hopefully these characters will grow beyond superficial stigmas to show how diverse the gay world can be nut why wouldn't they start there? Surprisingly, there was no nudity, not one bare butt or penis sighting yet but the night is young. In the one risqué scene of the pilot the focus was more on intimacy than sex.
It was refreshing to hear Dom finally call Patrick out on his bullshit, specifically that Patrick thinks he should be with this "perfect idea of a guy" according to society and his mom's impossible standards that really wouldn't make him happy. After the pep talk with Dom, Patrick decides to take a chance on a random guy he encounters on the subway and then follows up with named Richie. Richie (Raul Castillo) is a bouncer and doesn't seem educated but he seems genuine, oozes depth and humanity, and could be just what Patrick needs. Plus Richie is really hot in real life (see below). Now if only Dom would turn his blunt attitude to Agustin and maybe the creative path of the series.

Jennifer Lawrence - America's sweetheart reprieved herself after the random white dress from the Golden Globes with this stunning, multi jewel toned, strapless Dior. I love the striping effect too.

Cate Blanchett - She has not only been dominating the award season with wins but also with extraordinary fashion. Saturday night was no exception with a gorgeous pale pink Givenchy.

Julia Roberts - Julia opted to wear an extremely clever pink Valentino jumpsuit that looked like a gown from the front and side until walked in, revealing pants instead of a gown. So fashionable and yet so functional too.

Kerry Washington - Olivia Pope's misstep was choosing a two piece gown that cut her stomach in awkward and strange ways. I just don't think pregnant bellies should be squeezed that way and none of us definitely needed to see it. The back of the top was the only redeeming factor as the black skirt and ribbon in her hair just read "little girl". She should have stuck to something like she wore at the Golden Globes where she was a vision in white. She is normally so spot on.

Jennifer Garnett - Her strapless, navy Max Mara dress has clean lines but was just a little boring for my taste. Yawn.

Random Notes

Emma Thompson got her wish and found flat Christian Louboutins to don on the red carpet, red soles and all. She also showed up Jennifer Lawrence for best photobomb when she photo bombed Lupita Nyong'o on the red carpet. Jared Leto learned from his last experience and gracefully dedicated his SAG Award to all of those who has passed from AIDS and all those living with HIV. The ombre on his long locks looked amazing. Matthew Mcconaughey also made mention of the topic in his random acceptance speech raising awareness. His Dolce & Gabbana jacket was my favorite menswear piece of the night but his speech sounded like he might have toked it up beforehand. Michael Douglas graciously won for Behind the Candelabra and rightfully thanked the delicious Matt Damon during his speech. It was nice to see not only that their love extends beyond the screen but that such a flamboyant work featuring two gay men as the main characters can win such major awards. And good for them for being comfortable enough with their own sexualities to portray such characters. It is refreshing to find that Cate Blanchett has a sense of humor when she mocked Mcconaughey's ramblings during her own acceptance speech for Best Actress.
