Oscar Fashions

Fashions & More at the Oscars

by J. Denton Bricker

I have to say that these Oscars were wrapped up in a big bow of gay this year. It is kind of like our Superbowl, right? We had Ellen, The Wizard of Oz 75th anniversary commemoration, Jared Leto won for playing a transgender role & gave a phenomenal acceptance speech, John Travolta debuted a new hairpiece, and Will Smith wore an ascot. Bette Midler and Idina Menzel both belted out divalicious songs too! Ellen was a wonderfully funny host, I love her suits, and her pink Glinda dress! She did kind of fizzle out at the end but I guess it is a long night. Seeing her pass out pizza to movie stars cracked me up and I loved the selfie shot chucked full of celebrities.

Billy Murray's shoutout to Harold Ramis was sweet. Did anyone else notice Cory Monteith's absence from the In Memoriam reel? You know Lea Michelle is pissed. Whoopi introduced The Wizard of Oz set and lifted her dress to reveal long, striped socks like the wicked witch of the east and ruby slipper stripper heels. Pink's performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was just fantastic from the nostalgic clips running on the screen, to Pink's stellar voice. Her stunning gown looked to be made from ruby slippers and it had a plunging neckline that showed just enough. I can imagine Liza cringing in her seat, gripping her sister's hand as she mumbled about why she wasn't asked to sing and that Judy was her mother. You know she was pissed about Ellen's comment about drag queens. Bette Midler sang "Wind Beneath My Wings" live for the first time for her Hollywood peers and Idina Menzel sang "Let it Go".

Best Dressed:

Cate Blanchett - This best actress nominee should win the Oscar for her fashion choices alone throughout the entire award season. Her fabulous nude dress adorned with ice/diamonds/crystals/sequins looked like something out of Frozen. Giorgio Armani, she mentioned it was heavy but it looked so light and the chandelier earrings were a perfect balance. The girl worked those snowballs hard.

Lupita Nyong'o - She wore an amazing, yet simple duck egg blue dress, with a silver headband to make it looks all the more like a fierce Roman Domina. Her acceptance speech was adorable and inspiring. Look at her work it!

Charlize Theron - She looked divine and polished in a black gown by Dior that accentuates her curves in all the right way. The light straps give the illusion of strapless which give it a needed lightness on top.

Jennifer Lawrence - She is becoming a fall expert as she fell over an orange cone on the red carpet immediately after exiting her car; what a way to make an entrance and of course Ellen teased her about it. She looked gorgeous in bold, strapless, persimmon Christian Dior with blown back hair and simple accessories. I am not crazy about the peplums from the front as I am from the back. She also wore a necklace that drapes in the back; she is working that trend.

Kate Hudson - She has laid the foundation for a comeback with this startling beautiful and fabulous, shimmering silver frock. K-Hud is open for business.

Amy Adams - She donned a striking, deep blue 50's inspired Gucci Couture gown with tangerine earrings that popped.

Sandra Bullock - She impressed all in a navy gown conjuring images of old Hollywood glamor by Alexander McQueen.

Honorable Mention:

Kerry Washington - She glowed in a lavender gown by Jason Woo but her dark lipstick was a bit severe.

Angelina Jolie - She looked voluptuous in a metallic sheer combination form fitting dress that showed the perfect amount of skin. Her hottest accessory would be none other than Brad Pitt.

Anne Hathaway - She wore a sleek in black Gucci with a glittering jeweled top.

Meryl Streep - She wore a forgettable white/black ensemble with a glittering belt but let's be real, she can wear whatever the hell she wants. She could wear a burlap sack and no one would blink. Meryl is winning.

Worst Dressed:

Naomi Watts - She looked crisp and clean in a white dress by Calvin Klein though somehow I can't help but picture white lint balls all over it.

Julia Roberts - She wore an edgy black lace gown that was pretty but just wasn't the most memorable and the peplums bothered me here. It reads just a little old and it could be worn to a funeral.

Sally Hawkins - She looks like Diane Keaton from Father of the Bride, which looked good in 1990 but in 2014 looks ridiculous and way too big. Maybe throw in a little of Lydia's wedding dress from Beetlejuice too.

Penelope Cruz - She wore a pale pink sheet cinched at the waist by a black bow and she struggled with it over her shoulder throughout the night. A lot of folks liked this one but it just wasn't my favorite and caution must be exercised with such a pale color. There was nothing majorly redemptive about it like bright color or shape, which made Lupita's gown work so well.

Jennifer Garner - This just reads awkward. I want to like it because I like her but I just don't know if eight different rows of silver fringe really belong at the Oscars and the plain top isn't doing it any favors. I do like the color though.

The Men:

Jared Leto - He kept it fresh with a white jacket with a wine colored bowtie. I love the ombre in his hair.

Matthew McConaughey - He handsomely coordinated with Leto, also wearing a white jacket but was "dirty but in a good way," as Ellen quipped.

Joseph Gordon Levitt - He was really dapper in a black form fitting tux complete with bow tie. His red button is to recognize www.hitrecord.org which is a collaborative production company of artists, writers, photographers, filmmakers, etc. that he is part of.

Chris Hemsworth - Last but not least, he rocked an oxblood jacket that was ridiculously good looking much like he is. Yes, he is winking at you.
